I dug a hole and put a plant in my new garden. It is a lonicera sempervirens, one of the two that I planted this summer to begin to screen the back fence where the neighbor’s trees came down. Their roots were still pretty shallow, so I hope they adjust to the new garden okay.
I’ve sketched out a curve in the front of the house following the walk, and will plant a garden on either side, so you are enveloped in garden as you come to the front door. I will look into widening the walk so you are politely enveloped, not mugged, by the plants.
The past couple days I’ve spent taking down the row of blobby foundation shrubs along the front of the house so I can see the space better. I don’t like killing plants, but these had to go.
It doesn’t feel like a garden yet – it is still a yard – but it will. It will.
